Veracruz: Mexico’s Coffee Heartland

Veracruz is Mexico’s second-largest coffee-producing region, famed for its volcanic soil, high-altitude farms, and rich coffee heritage. Yet despite these ideal conditions, many small farmers struggled to receive fair prices, leaving their exceptional beans unsold. That’s where the Veracruz Coffee Strategy steps in — a government-backed project providing training, improved post-harvest processing, and new market access.

Aromas de Veracruz Coffee Competition & “Dragged Coffees”

This initiative also includes the Aromas de Veracruz Coffee Competition, where coffees are blind cupped by experts at the University of Veracruz and INECOL to identify the region’s finest beans. The top 30 move on for awards, but many coffees scoring 84+ points don’t make the final cut.

To avoid wasting these gems, the Veracruz government subsidizes their collection, storage, and cupping — ensuring these quality “dragged coffees” still reach the specialty market. These beans boast rich character and quality often overlooked in traditional competitions.
